A series about the last days of Knez Mihailo Obrenovic's life

On RTS's First Program, the seven-episode political thriller "Sto se bore misli moje" ("Why Do My Thoughts Struggle So") has begun airing, and you can watch it on the MOVE platform. The series portrays the last seven days of Prince Mihailo Obrenovic's life, his romance with the much younger fiancée Katarina Konstantinovic, and the circumstances leading to his assassination.

The series showcases significant events from Serbian history and the reign of Prince Mihailo, from the murder of a boy at Cukur Fountain to the handing over of the keys to Belgrade and other cities, marking a decisive victory in the struggle against Ottoman rule. Mihailo is a historically pivotal figure in Serbian history, always ahead of his time. This made him a thorn in the side of many during that era. The core of the series revolves around his political and personal (emotional) reflections leading up to his assassination. "Sto se bore misli moje" is a poem he wrote as a very young man, yet it perfectly captures the dilemmas he faced just before his murder in Kosutnjak (Belgrade) in 1868.

Prince Mihailo wrestles with his sense of duty to his people as a fatal conspiracy unfolds against him, threatening to halt the liberation of the Balkan nations. He is deeply in love with his niece, Katarina Konstantinovic, a controversial relationship opposed by many, from the clergy to the state leadership. Katarina, a captivating and intelligent woman, was his great love and a source of fascination for many men of the time. After securing the keys to five Serbian cities, Prince Mihailo is determined to achieve both of his goals - forming a Balkan alliance and marrying Katarina. Once again, Serbia stands at a crossroads.

In the lead role of the famous Serbian prince, Dragan Micanovic stars, while Katarina is played by Jana Ivanovic. Other cast members include Nebojsa Dugalic, Milos Timotijevic, Natasa Ninkovic, Luka Grbic, Ljubisa Savanovic, Aleksandar Sreckovic – Kubura, and others.

The director of the series is Milorad Milinkovic, and the script was created in collaboration with writer Dragoljub Stojkovic. “We made an effort to be historically accurate in what is known, but since many things are unknown, we allowed ourselves the freedom to express our opinion on those matters, such as who is behind the assassination,” explains Milinkovic.

The eponymous film was Serbia’s candidate for the Oscar last year, and TV viewers can watch this story on RTS1 every Saturday and Sunday at 8:05 PM.
