What are the "Essential Things" for Our Kids?

There's been increasing talk about how today’s kids are different - that they seem disinterested, don’t appreciate real values, and have more freedom than children did in the past. But is this really true? We’ll find out directly from the ones who know best - children themselves - through a new series on RTS's first channel.

Every Saturday, we’ll watch a new episode of “Vazne stvari” where hairstylist Borko seeks out genuine and spontaneous answers from kids in a small hair salon. To make sure the children feel relaxed and natural, the cameras are hidden, and the young, smart clients chat with Borko while he creates the hairstyle they’ve chosen themselves - whether it’s like Cristiano Ronaldo, Dennis Rodman, or perhaps Cakana from “Otvorena vrata”. While waiting for their new look, the boys and girls talk about a variety of topics, sharing their wishes, fears, happy and sad moments, and the challenges they face in childhood. Borko doesn’t ask heavy questions but lets the kids explain what “essential things” mean to them.

We’ll get a peek into the secrets of childhood and discover answers “straight from the source” to many questions. What makes them happy? What worries them? What are they afraid of? Have they fallen in love? What do they think about when they’re alone? How can one be a good person? From the many answers given by Borko’s clients, we’ll uncover a colorful universe of childhood, full of both joyful and sad stories. We’ll see that today’s children also experience their own fears and dilemmas, and that they still find joy in small things - like a piece of chocolate, for instance.

The show “Essential Things” is an adaptation of the award-winning Dutch format “Hofdzaken”, which has been airing for five seasons on the Dutch public service channel.

The editor of the project is Jelena Popadic Sumic, the producer is Milan Stojanovic, the director is Jelena Gavrilovic, and the hairstylist is Borko Jelenic. The project was created in collaboration with the RTS Children’s Program Editorial Team and the production company "Sense Production".
