“Nobelovac” - new series about Ivo Andric

On Saturday, October 5th, RTS1 will begin broadcasting the new drama series "Nobelovac," dedicated to Ivo Andric, a giant of Serbian and world literature of the 20th century.

The eight-episode series will depict the writer's life over several months in the fall and winter of 1961, starting from the moment he learned he had won the Nobel Prize until his return to Belgrade after the award ceremony in Stockholm, via Switzerland. The series tells the story of Andric's preparation for and journey to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize ceremony, while also exploring his childhood, literary work, diplomatic career, notable and lesser-known figures from that time, and even his often-mysterious love life.

Andric's life, much like his literature, was marked by a difficult childhood in Bosnia under Austro-Hungarian occupation, his acquaintance with Gavrilo Princip and involvement in the Young Bosnia movement, his encounter with Hitler during his diplomatic career in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, friendships with fellow writers of his time, secret loves, and post-war balancing between bourgeois Belgrade and the new socialist regime.

Each episode has two parallel narrative threads: one set in 1961, following Andric’s preparations for his trip to Stockholm, and another, a subjective, fragmented return to the past. Upon learning he won the Nobel Prize, Ivo Andric, like many of his characters, reflects on his actions and recalls his past in search of the meaning of his life. His view on pivotal moments, encounters, and decisions is filled with self-doubt, re-evaluation, and introspection.

The creators of the series are Tihomir Stanic, Ivan Velisavljevic, and Vladimir Roganovic. The main roles are entrusted to Tihomir Stanic, who plays Ivo Andric, Selma Alispahic as Milica Babic, while the young Andric is portrayed by Igor Jurinic. The series has already been showcased at several film festivals (the first two episodes were presented at the Zlatibor Festival, the Sarajevo Film Festival, and the MTS dvorana), receiving great praise from the audience and those involved, who saw the final product for the first time.

Tihomir Stanic mentioned that this project fulfilled one of his greatest acting and personal dreams. He believes that as a nation, there was a duty to create a series that depicts the decisive moments in the life of the Nobel laureate. He feels the most crucial moment in Andric’s life was when, as an ambassador in Berlin, Andric chose not to flee to Switzerland but to return to occupied Belgrade, sharing the fate of the people to whom he decided to belong.
